LtCol Short enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1993 and served as an Assault Amphibian Vehicle Crewman from 1994 until 1998 with 2D Assault Amphibian Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC. In 1998 he entered the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP) attending college at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. In December of 2001 he graduated and was commissioned a Marine Second Lieutenant. Following graduation from the Basic School and Infantry Officer’s Course, 2ndLt Short attended Naval flight training and he was designated a Naval Aviator in July, 2004. He then completed AH-1W pilot qualification at HMT-303 in January 2005.
1stLt Short was then assigned to HML/A-167 at MCAS New River, North Carolina. He served with the “Warriors” from February 2005 to January 2010. During that time he deployed with the squadron in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom IV from August of 2005 through March of 2006. In January of 2007 Capt Short deployed as a member of HMM-264(REIN) in support of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) until May of 2007. Following that deployment, Capt Short completed Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course 1-08 at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) at MCAS Yuma, Arizona. He then deployed from February until September 2008 with HML/A-167 as the squadron AH-1W WTI in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom VIII. From May 2009 until December 2009 Capt Short deployed with the 22nd MEU, VMM-263(REIN) as the AH-1W WTI.
From February 2010 until May of 2011, Capt Short served with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines as a Forward Air Controller and Air Officer, to include the unit’s deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. From June of 2011 until May 2014 Capt Short was assigned to MAWTS-1 where he served as an Air Officer Department (AOD) instructor and Aviation Developing Tactics and Evaluation (ADT&E) aviation integration specialist.
From May of 2014 until August of 2016 Maj Short was assigned to Marine Corps Augmentation and Training Support Unit, which included assignment to multiple Joint Task Force overseas operations.
From August 2016 until May 0f 2018, Maj Short was assigned to HMLA-269, where he served as the Director of Standardization and Safety (DoSS) and the squadron Executive Officer. Following his time with the “Gunrunners”, Maj Short remained at MCAS New River and served as the Operations Officer for MAG-29.
