Sergeant Major Josue Ayala HMLA-167 Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major Josue Ayala enlisted on 20 May 1996 and attended Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina and upon completion he was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class in August 1996.  After graduating MCT, Private First Class Ayala attended the Supply Administration Basic School and received orders to Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 in Iwakuni, Japan in November 1996 as the Due In and Status Clerk for the unit.  Private First Class Ayala was promoted to Lance Corporal in May 1997.   In June 1998, Lance Corporal Ayala was promoted to Corporal.  In August 1998, he received orders to 2d Marine Headquarters Group, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  Corporal Ayala was assigned as the NCOIC for the section and Property Clerk and was promoted meritoriously to Sergeant in May 2000.

In December 2000, Sergeant Ayala received orders to report to Inspector Instructor Staff, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion, Headquarters Company, Tampa Bay, Florida where he was assigned as the NCOIC of his section and Color Sergeant for the unit.  In January 2003, the unit was called to deploy to support Operation Enduring Freedom.  During Sergeant Ayala’s deployment to Camp Commando, Kuwait he was assigned as the Sergeant of the Guard for Camp Marguarita.

In May of 2003, Sergeant Ayala was promoted to Staff Sergeant and was assigned duties as the Camp Gunnery Sergeant for Camp Matilda, responsible for the maintenance and care of the entire camp’s facilities.  Upon his return from Iraq, Staff Sergeant Ayala attended Drill Instructor School at Marine Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina in July 2004.  Staff Sergeant Ayala graduated and was assigned to India Company, Third Battalion, MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina.  In May 2007, Staff Sergeant Ayala was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and in August 2007, Gunnery Sergeant Ayala received orders to 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, Okinawa, Japan and was assigned as the Battalion Supply Chief.  In March 2008, Gunnery Sergeant Ayala deployed with 3d Reconnaissance Battalion as the Battalion Supply Officer and the Contracting Officer Representative.   In July 2010, Gunnery Sergeant Ayala received orders to report to 7th Engineer Support Battalion as their Supply Chief.   In January 2011, Gunnery Sergeant Ayala was selected to First Sergeant and received orders to 3d Battalion, 1st Marines as the Kilo Company First Sergeant, and deployed with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit.  In the summer of 2013, First Sergeant deployed again in support of the Unit Deployment Program.   

In July 2014, First Sergeant Ayala received orders to The Basic School, Quantico, Virginia to serve as the Company First Sergeant for Basic Officer Course, Alpha Company.  In May 2015, First Sergeant Ayala was assigned to the Warfighting Instructor Company to serve as the senior enlisted advisor.  On June 16, 2016 First Sergeant Ayala was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major and received orders to Combat Logistic Battalion 26.  On 24 March, Sergeant Major Ayala assumed his post as the HMLA-167 Sergeant Major. 

Sergeant Major Ayala’s personal decorations include:  Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star.
