SgtMaj Heyward's Marine Corps career started on 25 July 1993 when he reported for Recruit Training at MCRD San Diego.  After graduating Recruit and Marine Combat Training he reported to the Basic Helicopter Course (BHC) aboard NAS Millington, TN.  Here PFC Heyward volunteered for, and was accepted into, the Aircrew Candidate Program.  On 25 March 1994 he graduated BHC, and was assigned to Naval Air Crew Candidate School aboard NAS Pensacola, Fl.  After completing his training on 6 May 1994, he reported to HMT-302 aboard MCAS Tustin, CA to complete the remainder of his flight training earning him the MOS of 6173, helicopter crew chief aboard the CH53E.  Upon graduation he reported to HMH-465 aboard MCAS Tustin.  In June of 1995 he deployed to Okinawa, Japan for a 7 month UDP where on 1 August 1995 he was promoted to Cpl.  In June of 1997, Cpl Heyward again deployed to Okinawa and was attached to, and deployed with the 31st MEU where he was a member of a TRAP team that recovered a downed CH-53 in the jungles of northern Thailand.  Cpl Heyward was promoted to the rank of Sgt on 1 August 1997 and returned home later that year.  July of that year he deployed again, this time with the 11th MEU.  During this deployment Sgt Heyward participated in Operation Stabilize on the island of East Timor, Indonesia.  During his time with HMH-465 Sgt Heyward was qualified as an instructor in aerial gunnery, night systems, and terrain flight.  Upon return from deployment, Sgt Heyward received orders to HMH-772 aboard NASJRB Willow Grove, PA.  Sgt Heyward was promoted to SSgt 1 January 2001.  After the events of 11 September 2001 SSgt Heyward was deployed in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, earning his Combat Aircrew Wings and three Air Medals.  After returning home SSgt Heyward received orders to Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 26 aboard MCAS New River, NC to serve as the NATOPS Evaluator. Upon reporting, SSgt Heyward immediately attended the Career Course and following graduation was assigned as the SNCOIC for the rear detachment of the MAG HQ as the MAG was deployed at the time of his check-in.  On 1 December 2005 SSgt Heyward was promoted to GySgt and upon both the return of the MAG and completing the Advanced Course, was placed in the HQ Squadron 1stSgt billet.  GySgt Heyward then received orders to Marine Corps Embassy Security Group as a Detachment Commander Student, where he graduated the top of his class.  In September of 2008 he subsequently reported to American Embassy Budapest, Hungary.  Upon selection to 1stSgt later that year, GySgt Heyward was frocked on 14 June 2009 and received orders to 1st Bn 12th Marines, Kaneohe Bay HI, where he was further assigned to Battery A.  1stSgt Heyward was later assigned to HQ Battery in August of 2010.  In July of 2011 1stSgt Heyward deployed to Afghanistan and upon return was selected to attend the US Army SgtMaj Academy (USASMA) aboard Ft Bliss, TX.  In June of 2012 1stSgt Heyward attended the USMC Senior Enlisted PME (SEPME) in Quantico VA while en route to USASMA.  On 17 June 2013 1stSgt Heyward completed his AA degree in Business and on 21 June 2013 he graduated USASMA.  On 8 July 2013 1stSgt Heyward reported to 8th Comm Bn where he served in both Service and HQ Company.  On 3 Dec 2014 1stSgt Heyward was frocked to the rank of SgtMaj and on 4 Dec 2014, reported for duty as the SgtMaj for 2D Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO).  On 13 January, 2017 SgtMaj Heyward took his current assignment at HMLA-269. 

Personal Achievements/Awards Include:  II MEF Commanding Generals Leadership Award, Meritorious Service MedalAir Medal 3rd Award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal 3rd Award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal 2nd Award, and 1st Degree Black Belt in MCMAP.
